Teenage Skincare - The Do's & Don'ts

Attention parents of teenagers: Are you ready to crack the code to flawless teenage skin and discover why investing in your teen's skincare routine is more than just a passing trend—it's a vital step towards fostering confidence, independence, and lifelong wellness.

As a parent myself, I understand the struggles our teenagers face, especially when it comes to skincare. Hormonal changes, environmental factors, and lifestyle habits can wreak havoc on their delicate skin. But not to worry! With the right guidance and trusting the process, your teen can achieve clear, glowing skin and cultivate healthy habits that last a lifetime. Join me as I step into the essential do's & don'ts to empower our teens with the tools they need to shine from within.

The Do's:

Encourage your teen to establish a daily skincare routine consisting of cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection. Consistency is key to maintaining healthy skin.

Opt for gentle, non-comedogenic and pH-balancing skincare products.

Staying hydrated is essential for healthy skin. Encourage your teen to drink plenty of water and use a lightweight moisturizer to keep their skin hydrated without clogging pores.

Sunscreen is non-negotiable, even for teens. Teach your teen the importance of daily sun protection to prevent sunburn, skin cancer and premature aging.

Eating a balanced healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins can promote clear, glowing skin from the inside out. Encourage your teen to fuel their body with nutritious foods for optimal skin health.

The Don'ts:

While cleansing is important, over-washing can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Advise your teen to cleanse no more than twice daily with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser.

Avoid harsh abrasive scrubs such as apricot, kernel, charcoal or sugar, and any products that contain spherical micro-beads, as these can cause micro-tears in the skin and worsen acne. Instead, recommend chemical exfoliants containing AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) or BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acid) to gently remove dead skin cells and unclog pores.

Don’t pick or pop pimples, this can lead to scarring, infection, and worsened inflammation. Encourage your teen to resist the urge and opt for spot treatments or a nice facial ice bath to calm skin.

Never share makeup, sponges other facial tools as these can spread bacteria and lead to breakouts.

Real Friends Will Apply Your Sunscreen

And this bears repeating…Sunscreen should never be skipped, even on cloudy days. Help your teen find a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher that they'll be willing to use daily.

Following these simple do's & don'ts, your teen can achieve clear, radiant skin and establish healthy skincare habits that will serve them well into adulthood. Encourage open communication, provide guidance, and lead by example to set your teen on the path to skincare success. With your support, they'll be glowing with confidence in no time!

NOTE: It's important to acknowledge that while adopting a proper skincare routine and using effective products like Lokenani can significantly improve skin health, acne is a complex condition that cannot be cured outright. For some teenagers, despite their best efforts, acne may persist or worsen over time. In such cases, seeking the guidance of a dermatologist is essential. By consulting with a healthcare professional, teens can access the necessary support and interventions to effectively manage their acne and achieve clearer, healthier skin in the long run.
